Struggling to fit music lessons into a packed schedule? In this episode, I share a creative scheduling solution that makes time for music, and why prioritizing this life-enhancing experience is always worth it.
I’m Mindy Peterson, host of Enhance Life with Music podcast, where we explore the ways music transforms everyday life. And this is Microhance, a micro-dose of musical enhancement.
Today’s episode is a quick tip for families and students who are struggling to find time for music lessons.
Students today are juggling more than ever: academics, sports, jobs, volunteering, faith involvement…the list goes on. It’s easy to conclude: “We just don’t have time for music lessons.”
But here’s the truth: you will never regret choosing music. The benefits last a lifetime – neurologically, academically, emotionally, creatively, professionally. The key is getting strategic about how you make time for it. And today’s tip is one of the smartest creative scheduling solutions I’ve seen – and I’ve personally used it with my own kids and students:
Earn High School Credit for Private Music Lessons.
Yes – this is a real option, and it exists in many states and school systems across the U.S.
Many public, charter, online, and even some private high schools allow students to earn official high school arts or elective credit for the instrument lessons they are already taking privately – piano, violin, voice, guitar, etc.
Sometimes it’s called Independent Study, Directed Study in Music, or Applied Music – and it typically involves partnering with a school-approved instructor, documenting progress, and submitting occasional performance or reflection milestones.
Here’s why this matters:
✅ Students receive actual high school credit
✅ That credit can replace another arts or elective requirement
✅ Which can free up a study hall or open period during the school day
✅ Which can be used for homework… or dedicated practice time
Bottom line: You’re already be doing the work – you might as well earn high school credit for it and reclaim valuable time in your day.
When my daughter did this – it absolutely reduced schedule pressure during intense athletic seasons and Honors-level coursework – while still allowing music to remain a daily priority. (She went on to be a Division I college athlete, so I can assure you, we know about intense athletic schedules.)
Parents – be aware of this. Students – ask about it. Music teachers – bring it up to your families. This option exists – but most people simply don’t know to ask. Find out if your school offers independent or directed study credit for private music instruction. The answer might open up a meaningful block of time – and make it not only possible to prioritize music, but actually easier.
Sometimes the time we need is already there. We just need to know where to look.
If you use this strategy, or have another creative scheduling solution, I would love to hear about it.
