Ep. 23: Enhance Athletic Performance by up to 15% with the Legal Doping of MUSIC, with Power Music’s Dan Hubbert

December 31, 2019

You probably don’t need scientific studies to convince you that music makes exercise more enjoyable. But what is its true effect on exercise intensity and endurance? According to Costas Karageorghis, Ph.D., one of the world’s leading authorities on music and exercise, “Music is like is a legal drug for athletes. It can reduce the perception of effort significantly and increase endurance by as much as 15 percent.”

Improv

Try using music you NEVER listen to. For example, if you’re a pop music person, trying working out to some hard rock from the 70s and 80s. Or if you’re into Alternative 90s music, try working out to Pop hits from the 2000s. You get the idea. The point is to not only trick your body into growth through new exercises, but new music will also stimulate and motivate your workouts.

Dan tells the story of his time in music school playing guitar 15 hours a day; then how busy life took him away from the guitar; and a later return to his instrument and passion for music again.

Closing Words

Thank you, listeners, for joining us today. And Happy New Year! I am stealing a New Year’s toast from Quincy Jones – I just watched Netflix’s documentary called Quincy – which I highly recommend (for adults; there is adult language throughout). Quincy gave a great New Year’s toast in the film, which I’ll echo here: May 2020 bring you “love to share, health to spare, and friends who care.” If you are interested in making music learning more a part of your new year, and would like a list of recommended books and movies, click on this link. This is a list that was developed for my students, so nothing with pervasive adult language is included. There are a variety of movies on the list, including documentaries available on Netflix; biopics such as Ray (biopic of Ray Charles), and movies that are 10-20 years old, but phenomenal, like Mr. Holland’s Opus. And there are animated movies like Sing for young kids – or the young at heart. The book list does tend to be geared more toward children, but there are some titles for older kids/adults. And I don’t know about you, but I absolutely LOVE kids’ books. Reading kids books out loud with my kids and taking them to the library was one of my absolute favorite things about having young kids, and many of the elementary age books on the list are full of interesting facts and are a quick and easy way to get some great info. Instant gratification! Plus beautiful pictures on some of them! Get a bunch from the library and treat yourself to reading one before bed every night – or help instill an appreciation for music in the children in your life, whether it’s your own children, nieces/nephews, grandchildren. Once again, here is the link to the list. While you’re on my website, please say “hello!” I’d love to hear from you! Tell me how YOU enhance life with music by leaving a comment below, comment on social media (I’m on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn), or send me an email (mindy@mpetersonmusic.com). If you enjoy the show, please subscribe, rate, and review in whatever podcatcher you use – and tell a friend! Consider it a free and environmentally friendly gift! Until next week, Happy New Year; and may your life be enhanced with music.  Disclosure: Some of this site’s product links are affiliate links, which means we may receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you, for purchases made through these links.
