Micro 11: Why I Listened to a Country Song, and How My Daughter’s Text Turned Me Into a Sappy Mom

Use music to celebrate an occasion

Learn why I reluctantly listened to a country song and the surprising impact it had on a minor holiday. Discover the power of music to help us more fully experience connecting family moments. Elevate your next milestone moment, whether it’s a vacation, family reunion, move to a new home, or first day of school.

I’m Mindy Peterson, host of Enhance Life with Music podcast, where we explore the ways music makes our lives better. And this is Microhance, a micro-dose of musical enhancement.

My young adult daughter, Adrienne, recently sent a text in our family chat, sending a link to Luke Combs’ Fathers & Sons album that had just released. She also sent a specific link to the song Front Door Famous, saying: this is the best one i think 🥹🥹 reminds me of when dad got home from work and we would run into his bear hug 🥹🥹

I will say, I’m NOT a country music fan. But… Adrienne is my oldest child, my only daughter, and she just got married (at the time of her text, her wedding was about a week away; more on that in a future episode!). And it was just Father’s Day recently here in the US, the Sunday before our daughter’s wedding. So when I got the text, I indulged my sappy side and listened to these tracks. And yes – they gave me goose bumps.

I’ll include a link to the lyrics in the show notes, but here are the words to the chorus:

Walking through the front door
Hearing “Daddy” at the top of his lungs
With his feet on the wood floor
Runnin’ up to give me a hug
Yeah, that’s what it’s all for
And the spotlight can’t replace it
In a heartbeat man, I’d trade it
‘Cause it ain’t got nothing on bein’
Front door famous

(by Luke Combs / Nick Columbia / Blake Densmore / Robert Snyder / Noah Thompson)

Today’s tip is to enhance family milestone moments with music. There was something about listening to this song that helped me fully immerse myself in the Father’s Day holiday. It took me beyond a mental acknowledgment of the day on the calendar and brought a more full-person experience: re-living memories, sensing gratitude for positive father figures in my and my kids’ lives.

Now I am fully aware that my kids and I are incredibly blessed to have positive father figures in our lives. Today’s tip is not about Father’s Day; it is being aware of milestone moments that can be more fully realized and experienced with music. It could be a full album, a personal playlist, or a single song that becomes your anthem. Your next family milestone moment may be:

One other tip if you’re like me and don’t usually listen to country music: I remember several years ago a friend telling me that she personally didn’t gravitate toward country music, but her kids and husband did. And she learned to embrace it – both because they enjoyed it and because she recognized that the lyrics tended to be family-friendly, wholesome, respectful toward women, and reflected their family values in other ways. I found that to be a very insightful perspective. I still haven’t turned into a country music fan, but the bonus tip today is to use your kids’ (or others’) recommendations and musical interests to broaden your horizons and expand your palate.

I’ll include a link to Luke Combs’ new Fathers & Sons album in the show notes, and Adrienne’s four other must-listen songs on the album:

If you use music to enhance a milestone moment, I would love to hear about it.
