Micro 40: What Springsteen Taught Me About Living My Values

Bruce Springsteen human politics

What if there were a way to stand firmly in your beliefs without creating division? Bruce Springsteen’s approach to “human politics” goes beyond partisanship – he lives his values through consistent, grounded action. In this episode, I explore what The Boss taught me about walking the talk, building bridges, and modeling a rare kind of leadership rooted in integrity, connection, and meaningful impact in today’s polarized world.

I’m Mindy Peterson, host of Enhance Life with Music podcast, where we explore the ways music can make our lives better. And this is Microhance, a micro-dose of musical enhancement.

I have been spending a lot of time with extended family this summer. I have family members who I love and respect who are at extreme ends of the political spectrum, some on the left and some on the right. You probably do, too. During my most recent visit with family, which was last week, I happened to be reading a biography of Bruce Springsteen, by Meredith Ochs. I really enjoyed the book; it’s called Bruce Springsteen: An Illustrated Biography. And one aspect that stood out to me wasn’t just Bruce’s music – but the way he lives his values. He models something I want to show more of: something he calls Human Politics.

While Bruce’s level of overt political involvement has morphed over the years, one thing that has remained constant is putting his values into concrete action. He wove real human political action into his tours: fundraising for local food banks, supporting veterans, raising awareness for environmental protections. He put his own money into what he was advocating. It wasn’t partisan. It was personal. Purposeful. Grounded in action. Human.

What made this even more intriguing to me was that Bruce’s political activism did not increase polarization. In a time when it feels like everything is designed to be divisive and inflammatory, his story offers something refreshingly different: HUMAN politics. Eventually, Bruce did decide to endorse specific candidates. Even then, fans who vehemently disagreed with his politics still showed up, still sang along, still respected him. Why? Because he’s consistent. Because he backs it up. Because his values aren’t just words – they’re lived out, in ways that help real people.

Other artists have been harshly criticized – or even canceled – for a single political statement. Bruce has somehow created space for disagreement without alienation. His “walk the talk” approach has built credibility across ideological lines. He’s principled, disciplined, and generous – not just in theory, but in practice. Meredith’s book points out that Bruce’s work was intentional – to heal, not to hate; and in turn it “fanned the flames of debate, not hate.”

President Obama, when awarding him the Medal of Freedom in 2016, said Bruce’s music – and life – asks: What is the work for us to do in our short time here?

For Bruce, the answer seems to be: Live with integrity. Let your art reflect your ideals. And use whatever stage you’ve been given to serve others – not to divide, but to connect.

In a polarized world, that might just be the most radical kind of politics there is.
