This Memorial Day week, discover the inspiring true story of Steinway’s “Victory Vertical” pianos – specially designed during World War II and parachuted to overseas troops in the midst of war. In this short episode, we explore how music provided comfort, connection, and hope during one of history’s darkest chapters – and why its power to preserve humanity still matters today.
I’m Mindy Peterson, host of Enhance Life with Music podcast, where we explore all the ways music can make our lives better. And this is Microhance, a micro-dose of musical enhancement.
Here in the US, we celebrated Memorial Day this week, a federal holiday dedicated to honoring all military personnel who died in the line of duty, and recognizing their sacrifice in protecting our safety and freedom. Today’s story is about an unexpected piece of musical history from World War II.
During wartime, most American manufacturers shifted their production to support the military effort. Car companies made tanks. Typewriter companies made weapons parts. And Steinway & Sons – one of the world’s most famous piano makers – temporarily stopped building pianos and instead produced military equipment – and coffins – for the US government. While Steinway was forbidden to build pianos, which required materials needed for the military effort, they were granted a contract to build specially designed pianos for troops in battle. These pianos were dubbed “Victory Verticals” or GI pianos, and were not your typical Steinway upright. They were designed to be lighter, sturdier, and able to withstand humidity, temperature swings, and rough transport conditions. Instead of polished ebony, the finish was military khaki. Beginning in 1942, over 3,000 Victory Verticals were dropped by parachute to commissioned soldiers, complete with tuning equipment and instructions.
Think about that for a moment. Even in the middle of a global war – with resources stretched thin and survival at stake – leaders still believed music mattered enough to send pianos into war zones. Why?
Because music helps preserve humanity when circumstances threaten to strip it away. Historical accounts describe soldiers gathering around these pianos to sing popular songs, hymns, jazz standards, and tunes from back home. In hospitals, music offered comfort to the wounded – and their caretakers. In camps far from family, it created moments of normalcy and connection.
Sometimes the piano player wasn’t a trained musician – just someone who knew enough chords for everyone else to sing along. And actually, that may be one of the most beautiful things about music: its ability to unite people regardless of skill level.
Researchers today continue to confirm what those soldiers already knew intuitively: music reduces stress, regulates emotion, strengthens social bonds, and even supports resilience during trauma and adversity.
So this Memorial Day week, take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedom, and also on the surprisingly powerful role music has always played in helping people endure hardship, maintain hope, and stay connected to one another.
A simple upright piano may seem insignificant compared to the machinery of war. But those Victory Verticals carried something essential: comfort, morale, memory, and humanity. In the middle of chaos and uncertainty, they reminded soldiers what they were fighting for – home, community, beauty, and the people they loved.
And maybe that’s still one of music’s greatest gifts today. It helps us remember who we are, what matters most, and how deeply connected we all are to one another.
I’m Mindy Peterson, and I hope this inspires you to enhance your life with music.
