Discover the surprising ways music shaped World War II and other conflicts – from boosting morale and bringing soldiers closer to home to transforming instrument factories for the war effort. Music historian Dan Del Fiorentino explores music’s remarkable power in wartime and shares some of the most impactful stories he’s heard first-hand through NAMM’s Oral History Program.

Guest

Today I’m joined by Dan Del Fiorentino. Dan is the Music Historian for NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants). He heads the industry’s Oral History Program, a collection of almost 6,000 video interviews, and he’s a fellow podcaster – he co-hosts The Music History Project podcast. Dan has a lifelong passion for music and history.

BRAIN.FM If you’ve ever struggled with sleep, focus, or even just winding down at the end of the day, you’ll want to check out Brain.fm. Their tagline is “Music Powered by Science” – and that’s not just marketing. Brain.fm uses scientifically designed functional music that’s engineered to influence brain activity for focus, relaxation, and sleep – helping you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and boost productivity when you’re awake.

Unlike Spotify or YouTube focus playlists or white noise, Brain.fm’s music is backed by patented audio technology that increases blood flow to brain regions associated with focus and flow state. There’s even a specialized feature to support focus for people with ADHD in a nonpharmacological way.

Personally, I’ve been using Brain.fm for over a year and absolutely love it! I listen to it it every night while I unwind before bed, and it makes a huge difference in getting into a relaxed mode where I’m perfectly prepped to ease into sleep. Focus is less of a challenge for me, but whenever I find myself in the middle of noise I can’t control, I just pop in earbuds, turn on Brain.fm’s focus music, and let the magic happen.

Coda

Dan encourages listeners to listen to the music your children or grandchildren love, ask them why it matters to them, and use music as a way to connect across generations.

Closing Words

I hope this conversation gives you fresh perspective as we approach Veterans Day and honor all who have served in the military on November 11.

Shortly after recording this conversation with Dan, I was at the Steinway factory in NYC (for my job with Schmitt Music), and they were displaying a Victory Vertical!
