What if music wasn’t just background sound but a powerful force shaping history? In Amazon Prime’s “House of David,” music isn’t just part of the story—it is the story. From battlefields to royal courts, grief to celebration, this ancient drama reveals music’s timeless role in human connection, healing, and transformation. Join me as we explore how this show brings to life some of the earliest recorded uses of music therapy—and why its impact still resonates today.
I’m Mindy Peterson, host of Enhance Life with Music podcast, where we explore the ways music can make our lives better. And this is Microhance, a micro-dose of musical enhancement.
There aren’t a lot of TV shows that interest me enough to devote hours of my time to watching them, but I have gotten hooked on the new show on Amazon Prime, called “House of David” – for many reasons, one of which is the central role music plays in this dramatization of ancient events. It’s almost like Music is one of the cast of characters. The show is set in ancient times and tells the dramatic story of Israel’s first two kings. It powerfully depicts the impact of some of the earliest recorded accounts of music therapy and is a stark reminder that music has been an integral part of every culture since humanity’s earliest recorded times.
Already, in the first several “House of David” episodes that have been released, music is shown in military use; in rituals and celebration; grieving; worship; connecting with loved ones – and keeping their memories alive after loss; artistic expression; a means of processing emotions; for mental health; and education… not to mention career opportunity, networking with royalty, and chick magnet!
And all this from an amateur, self-taught musician living in poverty with a rudimentary, hand-made instrument. There is truly “nothing new under the sun” (to quote a future famous member of the House of David). In ancient times as in today, Music provides a portal into the soul, and into relationships both human and divine. It’s a channel connecting otherwise disparate souls, and the human world to heavenly realms. Music elevates our shared existence, opens doors, and empowers us to fully experience and process life’s highs and lows alike.
