Why does music so often – and effectively – transport us into vivid memories, imagined futures, or entirely different emotional worlds? Dr. Margulis has spent years studying the fascinating phenomenon of musical daydreams. She joins us to discuss her brand new book on the topic, and what these deeply human experiences reveal about attention, creativity, emotion, and connection in today’s distracted world.
Guest
Dr. Elizabeth Margulis is a Professor of Music at Princeton University, where she directs the Music Cognition Lab. Her work bridges music, psychology, and neuroscience, and her award-winning books include On Repeat: How Music Plays the Mind. Dr. Margulis began her career as a conservatory-trained pianist before turning to cognitive science to explore why music has such a powerful ability to transport the mind. Her latest book just released TODAY – Transported: The Everyday Magic of Musical Daydreams.

Notes
We discuss:
- What “musical daydreams” are and why they happen so naturally during music listening
- How music can transport us into vivid memories, imagined futures, and emotional inner worlds
- The neuroscience behind musical imagination, memory, and emotional connection
- Why mind-wandering during music may actually benefit creativity, reflection, and well-being
- Surprising research showing that deeply personal musical experiences are often widely shared
- How music can reduce anxiety, foster connection, and help process difficult emotions
- How modern technology and the attention economy may be changing the way we experience music
- Why music may be one of the last spaces where the mind is still free to wander
- Practical ways listeners can cultivate richer, more meaningful listening experiences in everyday life
- One of Mindy’s favorite quotes from Elizabeth’s book: “In an age of fascination with magic mushrooms, there’s perhaps no ordinary experience that is more psychedelic than the mere act of listening to music.”

JAMBAR: In addition to music, I am passionate about health & well-being. For me, a healthy lifestyle includes eating a diet that is mostly whole, unprocessed foods. This is pretty easy when I’m close to home, but living a full life often takes us away from a convenient refrigerator and a predictable schedule. Enter my favorite whole food energy bar. JAMBAR is a Certified Organic whole food bar, non-GMO and gluten-free. Created by a food science and nutrition expert, athlete, and musician, JAMBAR is packed with protein and fiber, and minimally sweetened with only all-natural sweeteners. It doesn’t need to be refrigerated, and has a one-year shelf life. These bars don’t melt, freeze, or crumble – which means they can go from a day of ice skating in Minneapolis to a trip to the beach when I’m visiting my daughter in Florida. (The only problem with the beach trips is keeping my kids from eating all my bars because they love them, too!)
Fuel your full life and healthy lifestyle with JAMBARs. Available at Amazon, select retailers, and jambar.com. For more info, you can also visit Episode 160. Links are in the show notes.

Elizabeth explains the benefits in talking about and sharing your musical daydreams!

Closing Words
Elizabeth’s Coda is SUCH a good idea! And if you like this idea, you will probably also enjoy a similar concept that involves sharing music and musical memories in a board game format! The game is called Song Saga and is an amazing way to share stories and build connections with friends and family – especially with intergenerational groups.
